On Saturday May 30th, an unusual Ohio Breeding Bird Blockbuster will be held by the Yellow Creek Watershed Restoration Coalition. The Yellow Creek area takes in four Atlas Region corners (SW53, SE52, NW63, and NE62), including portions of Columbiana, Carroll, Jefferson, and Harrison Counties. Base of activities will be in the town of Bergholz, in northwestern Jefferson County, at the Bergholz Firehall. Early Atlasers can pick up a detailed map of potential exciting birding locales starting at 6AM. Obviously Atlasers can arrive anytime throughout the day. Participants hopefully will meet back at the firehall in late afternoon to compare the days findings, and also be provided with a catered cookout sponsered by Apex Landfill. The Yellow Creek Region boders the Ohio River to the east, is a pristine and scenic waterway with side hollows of mature hemlocks, stream banks with huge sycamores, rolling farmland, and reclaimed strip mine areas. Numerous Township roads provide vehicle access to most areas. Common Raven, Long-eared Owl, Whip-or-will, Blue Grosbeak, and Swainson's Warbler are some of the possibilities. Come and help explore this almost never birded corner of Ohio. For additional information contact Maggie Corder/Yellow Creek Watershed Coordinator at 740-264-9790.
