Kevin Hall and Adam Cirone joined me today at the Hoover Nature Preserve
to monitor Prothonotary Warblers and also to see what else was around. Both
these fine young men have helped me with the nest box trail maintenance in
the past, for which I am very grateful to them. We covered Oxbow Road,
parts of Area N and Area L. The migrants were mostly AWOL, hopefully a
temporary situation as there should still be more birds moving through. We only
located three species of warbler during the day, Prothonotary (34),
Black-and-white (1), and American Redstart (1). We heard several resident Northern
Parula but never got a decent sight-line on one. Resident nesting species
seen included Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Wood Duck, Osprey, Ruby-throated
Hummingbird, Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Acadian Flycatcher,
Eastern Phoebe [with very recently fledged young], Warbling and Red-eyed
Vireo, Cliff Swallow, Brown Thrasher, and Baltimore Orioles. Although total
activity was slower than expected, the Prothonotary Warblers are doing well
and seemed to be everywhere.
