An avid Ohio birder, know to many here in Ohio and across the country, Winnie Sarno of Massillon Ohio, lost her long-time battle with cancer at the age of 81 on Thursday morning, May 21, 2009. Her knowledge and love of birds will be greatly missed by those whom she continued to mentor.
With over 2500 life-birds and over 600 ABA lifers, she had traveled all over the United States and to many countries around the world. Her favorite trip was in 1999 to Thailand and just two years ago, at age 79, she crawled on her stomach in the Alaskan tundra for a life bird. She lived a full life and was loved and admired by many. 
 
In a recent OOS Bio, Winnie wrote:
 
"As I enter my 79th year with a sense of joy and appreciation for all the marvelous birding adventures encountered and yet to come, I realize that I am not just a part of the birding world, but birding is at the core of my being.

 
When I was diagnosed some 25 years ago with cancer that threatened to cut short my life, I became enamored with birds and their place in the world. As I began learning, observing, and listing, my focus changed from myself to these fascinating creatures. Over the next few years as cancer took my husband, my youngest son, and my siblings, I was able to balance my life with the joys of birding and sharing this joy with my two little great-granddaughters." 
Calling hours will be at Atkinson Feucht in Massillon Ohio, from 6 - 8 p.m. Monday.
Funeral mass on Tuesday at 10 am at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Massillon.
