This morning I spent a couple of hours (9-11 a.m.) at Darby Bend Lakes off Amity Road in Hilliard. I was amazed to see a pair of common loons on the south quarry lake. The male was there when I came into the park and the female landed just minutes later. They were on the lake for at least 30 min. Is this common this late in the year here?

I also saw at least 3 Baltimore orioles, eastern wood peewees, yellow warblers, a white-breasted nuthatch, killdeer, eastern meadowlarks, cowbirds, grackles, red-winged blackbirds, goldfinch, and of course robins and cardinals.Oh, and I watched two Savannah sparrows playing for quite some time. They would come up out of the grass, perch on a weed and squack at each other for a minute, then return to the grass, and they do it all over again. Fun to watch!

Also I need some expert help in identifying a bird I saw. It was the size of a robin and looked at first like a robin to me. It was, however, completely yellow on the breast. It had yellow on the tail middle section and acted much like a flycatcher would, flying out and back to the same branch and foraging into the tree for bugs. I watched it for about 10 min. but could not get an ID on it. It seemed too big for a yellow-bellied flycatcher and the head was not black like an oriole, but brown with brown feathers on the back. Any guesses from the birders out there?

Thanks for your help.
