A friend of mine just became interested in birds. She put up 5 feeders, but attracted mostly English sparrows, grackles, blue jays and starlings at the feeders or ground feeding. She began to find decapitated English sparrows. One or two a day, sometimes up to five. This dwindled her ES population considerably and  more interesting songbirds began to appear at her feeders.   My son suggested it was a grackle and she should keep watch. On her day off, she sat in a lawn chair hidden from view to catch the preparator. It did turn out to be a grackle, who had a taste for Englsih sparrow brains.
