John Lortz and I conducted the monthly census on Kelleys Island
yesterday. The day was overcast, light to moderate rain at times,
wind E at 5-12 mph, and temp in high 50's to high 60's F. This is the
12th year for the June census. Our average number of species has been
60 with 2776 individuals. This year we added two new species to the
June list which now stands at 100 species. Those species were Common
Tern and Northern Parula. Unusual species observed were Eastern
Bluebird(second time - 1999), Magnolia Warbler(second time - 1998),
Ovenbird(second time - 2000), and Yellow-breasted Chat(third time -
1999 and 2005). This year 64 species were observed and 3903
individuals.

The Common Tern, Northern Parula, Eastern Bluebird, and Ovenbird could
be breeding birds on the island. None have ever been confirmed. The
Magnolia Warbler is probably a late migrant or summering individual as
there is no breeding habitat for this species on the island. It was
observed singing along the North Pond trail in scrub habitat.
