Greetings birders - 

 

A Cleveland Metroparks birding group hit the Lake Erie region marshes and mudflats today, the 24th, from 8:30 am - 4 pm. A fantastic day in the field, with 77 species total, including 12 species of shorebirds. Highlights: Whimbrel, Long-billed Dowitcher, Little Blue Heron, Dickcissel.

 

A full impoundment of prime shorebird habitat is currently easy to access (open to public)at ONWR. Pool 2a has been hosting growing numbers of shorebirds numbering generally in the high hundreds Excellent new Ottawa refuge map available online (hardcopy brochure available at ONWR visitor center):

Highlights: 

WHIMBREL - 1 (according to Tom Bartlett, has been present for several days now)

Stilt Sandpiper - 30+

Short-billed Dowitcher - 120+

Long-billed Dowitcher - 6

Lesser Yellowlegs - 200+

Greater Yellowlegs - 30+

Pectoral Sandpiper - only a handful

Least & Semipalmated Sandpipers numerous, and Killdeer abundant

Semipalmated Plover - 5

Wilson's Snipe - 1

LITTLE BLUE HERON - adult

 

 

WILLOW POINT WILDLIFE AREA

Short-billed Dowitcher - 25

Least Sandpiper - 30

Semipalmated Sandpiper - 15

Spotted Sandpiper - 4

Lesser Yellowlegs - 15

 

PICKEREL CREEK WILDLIFE AREA

(As Gabe Leidy noted earlier....best impoundment is accessed by parking at the gravel lot that lies immediately east of the observation tower parking area...walk out past patch of woods and look NE)

Dunlin - 1

Short-billed Dowitchers, Lesser Yellowlegs, and Least Sandpipers fairly numerous but scattered.
