Hello all,

I've been doing some owling in my Atlas blocks this month. Driving around to various woodlots and playing tracks from the Div of Wildlife's Owl Sounds CD, Screech (track 14, 13, 14), Barred (track 8, 9) and finally Great Horned Owl(GHOL, tracks 19, 20). I wait about 5 mins between species, this has been surprisingly effective the last couple of weeks.

I've started getting young Barred Owls, sometimes before I even play the tape. The young sound similar to a GHOL, especially from a distance, but I would think a young calling this time of year would be a Barred. Any thoughts?

So far I've found 9 Barred Owls, 3 Screech Owls and 9 GHOL, and to be honest it's been a nice way to add hours to my way too many adopted blocks. The low number of Screech Owls seems odd, they are the most common Owl in Ohio and a later nester. The CD recording is shorter which maybe a contributing factor.

The ending Safe Date for these owls is Friday, but, of course, the juveniles will still count. I'm interested in hearing about other experiences with owls.

Peace,
