While running errands in Westerville (NE Columbus suburb), I visited a few local parks and part of Hoover Reservoir. Birds were what one might expect, with a few unusuals, but the big story was gypsy moths. While visiting Hoff Woods, a park with a small 10 acre oak woodland, I found a huge flight of gypsies. The male moths were out in the afternoon, and they were everywhere. There were hundreds in this pocket woodland; there wasn't a moment when I couldn't see a few fluttering around the understory or the canopy. If they mated with only a few females, this small woodland will probably be eaten down to the nubs. I couldn't find any in nearby County Line Park, but the woodlands there are riparian. However, anyone with oaks in the surrounding area may want to watch out.

Bird-wise, the interesting stories involve:
Green Herons - 1 was at County Line Park, fishing in the tiny stream there. This could be a commuter from Westerville North High School, where a pair likely is nesting this season in the woods along Spring Creek there.

Mute Swan - 1 persists in the wetland on County Line Rd across from Juniper Ave. I couldn't detect nesting, but 1-2 birds have been hanging around here for most of the Summer.

Cliff Swallows - the colony on the County Line bridge over Hoover Reservoir has steadily grown, and now might have more nest than any other colony on the reservoir, dam included. They're thick here.
