Have you had a chance to read Bringing Nature Home by Dr. Doug Tallamy? He stresses the importance of planting native species in your yard to support our native insects which in turn are available for our birds. Look for the new updated and enlarged paperback edition which has lists of plants to use by habitat and part of the country you are in. If we had more opportunities for insects to feed more would probably survive a cold snap. Just a suggestion. Maybe your library or nature center has it.
