Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php

Little Blue Heron: Jim Fry has been keeping tabs on an immature he discovered at the upper reaches of Lake Logan, Hocking 12 Aug, which was still present 22 Aug. Likewise, at least one continues at Ottawa NWR in Pool MS 8b (Jim Witter) and Emil Bacik observed an immy at Pickerel Creek WA 17 Aug.

Cattle Egret: A pair were present northwest of the Rt. 4/W. Strub Rd. intersection, Erie 16 Aug (Gabe Leidy). These birds were likely offshoots of the Turning Point Island colony, where eight were observed in the early a.m. 21 Aug (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy). To reach Shelby St. Marina, which overlooks the rookery, follow Rt. 4 to its end and head briefly west.

PIPING PLOVER: A female arrived late in the day at Conneaut Harbor 22 Aug, and was photographed by Laura Keene and Matthew Studebaker.

Merlin: Two reports: a female at Greenlawn Cemetary 23 Aug (Dave Slager, Ben Warner) and two migrants past Mentor Lagoons Preserve 26 Aug (Ray Hannikmann), including a bird that chased an Olive-sided Flycatcher off its perch.

American Avocet: At Conneaut, Aug 14th and 19th (4 birds) - m.obs.

Willet: Two visited Conneaut 16 Aug (Bob Krajeski) and another on the 27th (Bob & Denise Lane).

Upland Sandpiper: Capping a banner summer for this species, Matt Anderson heard a bird 15 Aug at Blue Creek Conservation Area in Whitehouse, specifically in the large field along Neapolis-Waterville Road, just east of Schadel Road. Wildly enough, a another of these grass pipers made it’s way onto a mudflat at Ottawa’s Pool 2A on 15 Aug (Jim Witter, m.ob.).

Hudsonian Godwit: Discovered at Pickerel Creek WA 18 Aug by Craig Caldwell, Ethan Kistler, and Brad Wilkinson, a molting adult hung around until 24 Aug (Kenn Kaufmann), though seemingly disappeared for some observers behind the island of greenery in the pool north of the woods.

Marbled Godwit: A juvenile at Pickerel Creek WA 18 Aug (Emil Bacik, Jerry Talkington, Gabe Leidy) was joined by another the following day (Emil Bacik, Jerry Talkington).

Red Knot: An adult arrived on the scene at Conneaut on 23 Aug (Laura Keene) and stuck around until 27 Aug for Bob & Denise Lane. At Pickerel, two juveniles delighted Dane Adams and Kenn Kaufmann 24 Aug and hung around for Ben Warner 26 Aug, though he reported rising water levels at the pool north of the woodlot, related to the upcoming teal season.

STINT SP.: In the a.m., 19 Aug, veteran observer Craig Holt observed a bird at Conneaut Harbor which did not seem to fit the makeup of any of our North American peeps. He extensively studied and tentatively identified the bird as a possible Little Stint, and other observers were fortunate to view and photograph the bird later that afternoon/evening. Experts from around the globe have weighed in on the photos/discussion, and a conclusive identity has yet to be reached.

Western Sandpiper: Juveniles were observed at Pickerel Creek WA 15, 16 (2), and 24 Aug (Emil Bacik, Jen Brumfield, Gabe Leidy, Kenn Kaufmann). A crisp juvenile was a first for Dane Adam’s yard list 21 Aug.

White-rumped Sandpiper: As with most shorebirds, Pickerel was the place to find them, with multiple birds present nearly everyday for the past couple weeks. Eight were present for Kenn Kaufmann 24 Aug. Two very cooperative adults wowed Conneaut viewers 23 Aug (Emil Bacik, Jay Lehman, Gabe Leidy, m.ob.).

Baird’s Sandpiper: A bird on private Lorain property stayed 15-17 Aug (Dane Adams).

Wilson’s Phalarope: Up to two continue to haunt various parts of Pickerel Creek WA (m.ob.). An inland migrant showed up at Englewood MP 18 - 20 Aug (Dave Collopy, Bev & Ed Neubauer). Somehwat ususual at Conneaut was a juvenile present throughout the day 20 Aug (Geoff Malosh, Jerry Talkington).

Red-necked Phalarope: A bird was been present, usually north of the observation platform, at Pickerel Creek WA 15- Aug (m.ob.). Dane Adams hosted the a lovely bird 21 Aug on his Lorain property.

Laughing Gull: A youngster sat atop the breakwall at Huron River Pier 21 Aug for Emil Bacik and Gabe Leidy.

Black Tern: 25 at Buck Creek SP beach 18 Aug made up a nice flock size (Rick Asamoto). Three also visited Englewood MP 20 Aug (Dave Collopy), two perused Hoover Reservoir 22 Aug (Dave Slager) and 13 were over Killdeer Plains WA Pond 27 21 Aug (Doreene Linzell, Rob Lowry, Dan Sanders).

Olive-sided Flycatcher: Early migrants showed up at Mentor Lagoons on the 12th and Indian Creek WA 14 August, for Ray Hannikmann and Greg Links, respectively. More expected was a bird present 26-27 August at “The Lagoons” (Emil Bacik, Ray Hannikmann, Jerry Talkington, m.ob).

Blue Grosbeak: A pair at Butler’s Voice of America Park livened Bill Pratt’s day 23 Aug.

Red Crossbill: The odd occurrence streak of this species in the Toldeo-area continues - on 14 August Greg Links observed three at Indian Creek WA. Greg gives the following directions: “Indian Creek can be accessed by driving north from Toledo on Douglas road, just past Dean road. Turn right into the gravel parking area near the bus garage, and drive back to the parking area. The areas I refer to above should be pretty obvious at that point. There are a couple of foot bridges that allow easy access over the creek.”
