Firefly Hollow
Little Hocking, OH

I was out in the garden yesterday early afternoon and observed a slow
trickle of nighthawks heading southeast over the hollow. Non of the large
flocks that have been reported here lately. Nighthawks are a bird that we
don't normally see here so it was a treat.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my goldfinch nesting question. I just
have taken those ubiquitous goldfinches for granted and never really paid
much attention to their nesting habits before. I had another species showing
interest in the pale yellow frayed yarn. It was a hummingbird.

I should have posted this sooner but I don't know if it was anything special
or not. On Wednesday, around 7:30pm, I saw a Peregrine falcon sitting on the
train trestle next to the downtown bridge in Parkersburg, WV. I had heard
that there was a nest on one of the train trestles in Parkersburg but had
never pursued looking for it. We couldn't stop on the bridge but since it
was almost at eye level across from us (and luckily I wasn't driving) I got
a nice look at it. It looked to be an adult. There were a few brave pigeons
on the same trestle not far from the falcon. There is definitely plenty of
food available for it.
