Of course, but since the sparrows speak English, the Shawnee may not have recognized the portent. :)

Boone was a captive at Chillicothe from February to June, 1778, so his travels in northern Ohio would have encompassed spring migration. Given that, my vote for a brown bird with a spooky voice is Veery.
