I visited the northeastern corner of Hoover Reservoir this morning to collect my marker ribbons from the Prothonotary Warbler nest box trail and to see the status of the shoreline. Hoover is receding very slowly but at least some meager mudflats are beginning to emerge. If the area doesn't get rain and the temperature stays high there should be some mudflats within a few weeks. Better late than never. Shorebirds were equally scare there as I could only manage a few Killdeer and 2 Spotted Sandpipers. But the morning was not a total zip as there were a few nice birds around. Near Pelican Island there were 7 Caspian Terns. In a cottonwood tree near the first old bridge I watched 2 adult Bald Eagles as they perched in the sunlight. One dropped down and as it skimmed the water it flashed its talons and came up with a fish. Then at the second old bridge near Pelican Island I made a surprise find that set a new record for me. There were a pair of adult Prothonotary Warblers feeding
rather large fledglings. Usually by August 13th the only Prothonotary Warblers I see are migrants from the northern parts of Ohio or from Canada. With patience I was able to find 4 fledglings. My assumption is that this is a second brood for one of the pairs I have been watching during the summer. It just goes to show that there is always something new to discover if you look.
