Alas, Ohio can expect oceanic birds like storm-petrels only after major storm events force them so far inland. I believe we have one record of a storm-petrel. Pomarine jaegers are rare late fall migrants to Ohio that are seldom seen anywhere other than Lake Erie. The other jaegers are even greater rarities in the state.

Your description of a bird that is black above, light below and with markings on the face matches black tern quite well. They are being reported from reservoirs around the state right now. Bob Royse has some typically excellent photos at http://www.roysephotos.com/BlackTern.html.

Please let us know what you find on your return trip.

Also, it is awkward responding to anonymous posts. Would you add a signature to yours?

Happy birding,
Paul
