In our yard, in the village of Damascus, we have numerous black walnut trees. One of them is located between the front of the house and State Route 534. It is that time of the year when the nuts are constantly falling; some of them come to rest on the roadway surface; and passing vehicles sometimes crush the nuts! Our neighborhood crows are creative enough to stand safely in the adjacent grassy area and when the opportunity arises hop out into harm's way to get the provided nut meats and return to safety. Apparently these very intelligent American Crows have acquired a taste for these seasonal treats!
