This morning I did the end of season maintenance and cleaning of my nest boxes at Dustin Road (Area L) at the Hoover Nature Preserve.  Although the mudflats had shrunk from the last rain, it appears that this actually attracted more shorebirds. The water is extremely shallow and the birds were avidly feeding. There was a nice variety of shorebirds and some egrets and Blue-winged Teal. The highlight as I posted earlier today was 2 Marbled Godwits. From later postings it appears they have changed location; however I expect they are still nearby. I plan to scout the mudflats along the northeast shore near Pelican Island tomorrow to see if I can relocate them.  If I relocate the godwits I’ll post their location. In the past when we’ve had godwits at Hoover Reservoir they have stayed for a few days to several weeks.

Species observed today included:

Great Blue Heron (4)

Great Egret (5)

Canada Geese (8)

Mallard (3)

Blue-winged Teal (2)

Semipalmated Plover (2)

Killdeer (27)

Greater Yellowlegs (14)

Lesser Yellowlegs (9)

Marbled Godwit (2)

Ruddy Turnstone  (2)

Sanderling (1)

Least Sandpiper (2)

Pectoral Sandpiper (6)
