For whatever it's worth, the northern rough-winged swallow I saw was at Alum
Creek Dam in Delaware County. I also mentioned in my original posting that
a northern rough-winged swallow had been seen at Hoover Dam in Dec. 2007. I
apologize for the confusion.

Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these
sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful
observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for
submitting your data. For details and pointers see:

Red-throated Loon: Lake-watchers near Conneaut, Ashtabula picked one up 15
Nov (Ed Schlabach fide Bruce Glick). On 17 Nov, two were seen from the
bluff at Sunset Park in North Kingsville, Ashtabula (Bruce Glick, Robert
Hershberger). One off Rocky River Park, Cuyahoga 19 Nov was part of that
day's terrific loon movement (Paula Lozano). Bresler Reservoir in Allen
continues to attract good waterbirds, including a Red-throated 22-24 Nov
(Rick Asamoto, Jackie Augustine). A single was among 4-500 Common Loons at
Caesar Creek SP, Warren 19 Nov (Jason Cade).

PACIFIC LOON: On Nov 19, veteran observers Bob Finklestein, Paula Lozano,
and Andrew Salvadori picked out an adult fairly close to shore at Rocky
River Park, Cuyahoga in the a.m. Observers in the afternoon were not
definitively able to relocate the bird, but this ought to become our fourth
state record. The bird's appearance coincided with a huge loon movement
statewide.

Red-necked Grebe: Scarce this fall - one was observed along Lake Erie near
Conneaut, Ashtabula 14 Nov (Ed Schlabach fide Bruce Glick), and then two
from Sunset Park - North Kingsville, Ashtabula 17 Nov (Bruce Glick, Robert
Hershberger).

Eared Grebe: Two birds continued at Bresler Reservoir, Allen 22 Nov (Rick
Asamoto).

Snow Goose: John Pogacnik watched three pass with a group of Canadas 15 Nov
along Rt. 2 just east of Painesville.

Cackling Goose: Jeff & Becky Cullen sorted one out of hundreds of Canadas
off Port Clinton Beach, Erie 22 Nov.

Surf Scoter: While lakefront scoters aren't out of the ordinary this time
of year, a nice male visited Wellington Reservoir, Lorain 16 Nov (Su
Snyder), and female was present at Bresler Reservoir, Allen 22 Nov (Rick
Asamoto).

Black Scoter: Bresler Reservoir, Allen hosted one 22 Nov (Rick Asamoto).

Cattle Egret: An unusual trend concerning late-occurring Cattle Egrets has
emerged over the past several years. On the heels of a flyby at HBSP a
couple weeks ago, through at least 11 Nov, one was observed in Knox (Junior
Nisley, Su Snyder).

Northern Goshawk: One passed Ed Schlabach's group 14 Nov, along the
lakefront near Conneaut, Ashtabula.

Merlin: One sitting atop a sailboat mast at Edgewater Yacht Club, Cuyahoga
15 Nov was a perfect close to this fall's second Lake Erie Pelagic trip
(John Pogacnik, m.ob.). More typical was one at Old St. Joseph's Cemetery
in Price Hill, Hamilton 11 Nov (Bill Zimmerman).

American Avocet: Of particular local excitement, an avocet that first
appeared 13 Nov at Cullen Park, Lucas (Mark Faust) has remained onsite at
least through 23 Nov (Mark & Sherry Plessner). Ironically, it is at the
same location that one that showed up on the Toledo CBC December 20, 1998!
Larry Richardson picked one out among the gulls on the Huron River flats 14
Nov.

Purple Sandpiper: The first of the fall was observed by participants on the
Lake Erie Pelagic 15 Nov on Cleveland's outer break wall (John Pogacnik,
m.ob.).

Pomarine Jaeger: A dark Pom well-observed off the coast of Euclid, Cuyahoga
was one of the highlights on the Lake Erie Pelagic 15 Nov (John Pogacnik,
m.ob.).

PARASITIC JAEGER: Ray Hannikman observed one from Headlands Beach SP, Lake
23 Nov. Matt Kemp reported an adult harassing larids at Bayshore Power
Plant, Lucas 11 Nov.

Jaeger sp: An unidentified jaeger was seen north of the mouth of the
Cuyahoga River on 15 Nov's pelagic (John Pogacnik, m.ob.).

Little Gull: Multiple Littles were recorded by Ed Schlabach, et al near
Conneaut, Ashtabula 14 Nov. Another Little passed Headlands Beach SP last
week, though no specific date was given (Emil Bacik).

CALIFORNIA GULL: An adult was picked out among the gull flock resting near
the beach west of Huron Pier 21 Nov (John Pogacnik).

Black-legged Kittiwake: Diligent lake-watchers found one 14 Nov near
Conneaut, Ashtabula (Ed Schlabach fide Bruce Glick). A bird passed on John
Pogacnik's Lakeshore Waterbird Survey 20 Nov from North Perry, Lake.

Purple Martin: A late bird remains in Apple Creek, Wayne through the week
of 20 Nov (Bruce Glick, Bobolink-area RBA).

Northern Rough-winged Swallow: Not every swallow still hanging around this
time of year is a Cave. Northern Rough-wings have proven to be pretty hardy
birds themselves, as were those witnessed by Al LaSala 21 Nov near Hoover
Dam, Franklin and Allan Clayborn 24 Nov in Fernald, Hamilton.

CAVE SWALLOW: Diligent observers along the lake picked up Caves at two
locations. The first report, while not specific to location, was of a bird
along the lakefront near Conneaut, Ashtabula 14 Nov (Ed Schlabach fide Bruce
Glick). On 21 Nov, three birds passed alongside Huron Pier and headed
inland, following the river, though could not be relocated (John Pogacnik).

COMMON RAVEN: Scott Albaugh watched a circling raven near Harrison Co.
Airport 21 Nov - the second sighting from this location in recent months.

Northern Shrike: Marilyn Rohr found a bird around the back picnic area at
Walter C. Best Nature Preserve, Geauga 15 Nov. Doug & Micki Dunakin were
surprised to find one in their neck of the woods 20 Nov in Carryall
Township, Paulding. Greg Emmert's bird continues in Holmesville, Medina
through 23 Nov (fide Dave Kersten).

Yellow-throated Warbler: Laura Bradley hosted one at her feeders in Goshen,
through 20 Nov.

Brewer's Blackbird: A pair were among a mixed flock of blackbirds along
Jones Rd, Lorain, 23 Nov (Larry Richardson). To reach this spot continue
along Jones Rd. west of Wellington Reservoir for a half mile or so; the
blackbirds were feeding in a cornfield on the left.

Common Redpoll: The first reports for the season were flyovers 12 Nov at
Cullen Park, Lucas (Mark Faust) and 22 Nov at Oak Openings, Lucas (Matt
Kemp).

Evening Grosbeak: A single fem paid a visit to Bob Krajeski's feeders in
North Kingsville, Ashtabula 14 Nov - his first in at least 15 years.
Unfortunately, this beauty was a one-day-wonder.
