A few minutes ago I looked out my front window and saw a bird sitting on the
gnomon of my sundial. I thought "hey, Eastern Phoebe"! Then I noticed that
the undersides were bright salmon-colored... Then I saw the black tail, and
ran for my camera.

I believe this has to be a Say's Phoebe!

By the time I returned with the camera the bird had flown to a nearby tree
(back to me, of course). I snapped a few shots, and the bird flew to a small
tree guard farther out in the yard. I went outside and I got a few more
blurry shots, whereupon the bird flew across the road into a cornfield.

I crossed the road and got some more distant, blurred shots of it sitting on
corn stubble, then the bird took off and flew out of sight over the trees to
the north.

I have to leave in a few minutes for our family Thanksgiving get-together,
but I will post some pictures later when I figure out how to do it.

The pics are not the best, but definitely show the field marks - gray back,
dark head, salmon underparts, bobbing black tail. I saw it take a couple of
short "flycatching" flights off of and back to the sundial before I went for
the camera.

I have no idea if the bird will return, but I will definitely be keeping an
eye out the next few days!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ken Beers
