December 14th begins this year's Audubon Christmas Bird Count season. That's a mere two weeks away and the Circle Compilers around Ohio are busily finalizing the preparations. Check the Audubon web site for a circle near you and join in. You'll meet some great people, have fun and contribute to an important Audubon activity.

The Hoover Reservoir Christmas Bird Count (Delaware County) will be held Saturday, December 19, 2009. I will have several teams meet at 8:00 AM in the parking lot at the Hoover Reservoir Dam and send them out to cover the east and west side of Hoover Reservoir and The Hoover Nature Preserve. Additional teams will meet at Alum Creek State Park (8:00 AM), Highbanks Metro Park (8:00 AM) and Sharon Woods Metro Park (10:00 AM), and in the vicinity of the Olentangy River north of Worthington. If you would like to join one of the teams other than those starting at the Hoover Reservoir Dam, give me a call at (614) 891-5706 or email me at [log in to unmask] for details and to enable me to alert the area team leader to expect you.
This is also a a good time to remind Christmas Bird Count Compilers and Participants that for the 2009 fall gun deer-hunting season, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has again extended the season to include extra weekends. ODNR added an extra weekend in deer gun season on December 19 and 20, 2009. If you participate in any area that may have hunters present you should wear something with Hunter Orange as a safety factor. The last thing you want to do is to wear a white hat or any other white apparel that could cause a hunter to think you are a white-tailed deer.
Reviewing the postings from Hoover Reservoir the last few days it appears that waterfowl are finally arriving in Central Ohio and the prospect of finding both good species and numbers is looking better. Swans, Snow Geese and multiple species of ducks are on a list that is growing daily.
May we all have a safe and productive Christmas Bird Counts.
Charlie Bombaci, Compiler
Hoover Reservoir CBC Circle
