I usually try to monitor several small woods east and northeast of Columbus to check for Red-headed Woodpecker 'irruptions'. They've become rare residents here, so winter wanderers have become our major source of sightings. Some years we have them; other years we don't. This year is shaping up to be a big example of the former. Blendon Woods has had 1-2 for over 2 months now, and I checked out three of these 'sentinel' woodlots yesterday. A private lot near Clark State Rd had 3-4, Jefferson Township Park woods had 3, and Swickard Woods had 1-2. The most I've had in the past was 2/3 sites, and never in these numbers. This year might be a 'perfect storm' for locating central and southern Ohio Red-headeds. The combination of good local acorn crop and poorer crop in northern Ohio, plus colder temperatures, may have pushed lots of them down. Watch for them in oak areas or woodlots with a significant # of oaks.
