The last two days I've been searching for mostly waterbirds at inland places with open water.  Started yesterday at Springfield L. near Akron (Summit Co.).  It was completely iced over, but along with some geese and gulls were 7 tundra swans resting on the ice.  From there I went to nearby Summit L.  This lake and the rest to follow had some open water, but are freezing by the day.  From the west shore of Summit L. I saw the following:  Canada geese, mallards, 4 Am. black ducks, a male mallard X Am. black duck, gadwall, 42 n. shovelers, 10 ring-necked ducks, female greater scaup, 4 lesser scaup, 5 c. goldeneyes, 75 hooded mergansers, 61 ruddy ducks, 6 pied-billed grebes, 70 Am. coots, and ring-billed gulls.  On the way east in Portage Co. a great blue heron flew over the freeway.  I went to Mahoning Co. next, first stop was L. Milton.  Here were Canada geese, mallards, 25 Am. black ducks, gadwall, 21 c. goldeneyes, bufflehead, 45 hooded
mergansers, ring-billed & herring gulls.  Just south of there along the Mahoning R. was a belted kingfisher.  On to the Rte. 224 causeway at Berlin Res. next, it had only mallards, 5 c. goldeneyes, 3 common mergansers, 40 Bonaparte's gulls, ring-billed and herring gulls.  Driving east through Jackson Twp. I spotted 2 n. mockingbirds.  To end the day, I checked Meander Res. from the I-76 bridge's westbound emergency lane (with flashers on).  This area has huge traffic flow, patrolling State Highway Police, debris, and on top of that the whole bridge bounces from the 18-wheelers flying by.  So I did a quick tally and found Canada geese, 60 gadwalls, 150 common mergansers, bald eagle, and ring-billed & herring gulls.  I got back into traffic and booked it out of there.  There is no other way to see this part of the lake that I know of.  Today I checked some smaller waters near home in NE Mahoning Co.  The stretch of the Mahoning River from
Struthers to Lowellville is again attracting birds, including Canada geese, mallards, 4 Am. black ducks, ring-necked duck, c. goldeneye, 2 buffleheads, 5 hooded mergansers, a Wilson's snipe (!), ring-billed gulls, e. bluebird, and n. mockingbird.  At nearby Hamilton L. were 150 Canada geese, mallards, 3 hooded mergansers, 150 ring-billed gulls, and 10 herring gulls.   Also, in Poland Twp. were 30 wild turkeys and red-shouldered hawks.  Later, Craig
