Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php

Brant: A foursome headed west past Sunset Park, Lake 28 Nov (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy), and nine more were headed the opposite way the same day from North Perry, Lake (John Pogacnik).

Long-tailed Duck: A trio passed North Perry, Lake on the active day of 27 Nov (John Pogacnik). Four flew by lake watchers at Sunset Park, Lake 28 Nov (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy).

Surf Scoter: A fem visited Mosquito Lake, Trumbull 25 Nov (Craig Holt)

Red-throated Loon: Plenty around of late. All sightings: 25 Nov Rocky River Park (Chris Pierce) and Clear Fork Reservoir, Richland (Jay McGowan), 28 Lake Buckhorn, Holmes (Bruce Glick), 30 Nov at Wellington Reservoir, Lorain (Bruce Glick, Robert Hershberger).

Red-necked Grebe: One was found at Pleasant Hill Lake, Richland 28 Nov (Gary Cowell, Su Snyder).

American Avocet: On 25 Nov, George Sydlowski was the last to report, and beautifully photograph, the bird hanging around Cullen Park near Toledo.

Purple Sandpiper: Bruce Glick, Robert Hershberger, et al reported the first of the season at Headlands Beach SP, Lake, on the break wall leading to the lighthouse.

Black-legged Kittiwake: John Pogacnik recorded one headed east off North Perry, Lake 29 Nov.

Sabine’s Gull: Three birds were an exceptional total this late in the year for this rarest of Ohio’s regularly occurring gulls. On 27 Nov, 2 juv passed quite close to shore at Eastlake Power Plant, Lake (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy, Jerry Talkington) and another youngster traveled by North Perry, Lake 29 Nov (John Pogacnik).

BLACK-HEADED GULL: An adult passed Sunset Park, Lake 28 Nov, flashing characteristic ‘half-black’ underwings (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy).

Little Gull: Adults passed North Perry, Lake 27 & Nov 29 (John Pogacnik). Two first-yrs passed Sunset Park, Lake 28 Nov (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy). Bruce Glick reported that a group of Wayne Co. birders had an adult of Headlands Beach SP 30 Nov.

Franklin’s Gull: Matt Kemp picked out two among larids at Bayshore Power Plant, Lucas 27 Nov.

Jaeger sp: Nancy Anderson described well a potential jaeger sp zipping around off Sim’s Park, Cuyahoga 27 Nov.

Pomarine Jaeger: A ‘Pom’ passed North Perry, Lake on John Pogacnik’s 29 Nov waterbird survey.

Golden Eagle: One seen from Jeffrey Point Bird Station 27 Nov was the first reported this season from The Wilds (Scott Albaugh), and consequently relocated by Craig Moore the next day.

Merlin: Scott Albaugh had a bird along Coal Hill Rd. at The Wilds 27 Nov. Two were seen together at Caesar Creek SP 26 Nov (Jay Lehman).

Barn Owl: A rural veterinarian in Jefferson Co. took in an injured Barn Owl 1 Dec (Scott Pendleton).

SELASPHORUS SP: Bruce Glick spoke with a Holmes Co. woman who has been hosting a rufous-tailed hummer at her feeders for six weeks. Birders planned to check it out early in the week.

SAY’S PHOEBE: Ken Beers of Yellow Springs, Greene had much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving when he looked out his front window to behold a Say’s Phoebe perched on a his sun dial lawn ornament! Luckily the bird stuck around for others, reported most recently by Emil Bacik on 30 Nov (no reports positive or negative today). The location is Hilt Rd, two miles northeast of Yellow Springs - and the bird has ranged along this road, often perching on fence posts and corn stalks. An address to Mapquest would be 1925 Hilt Rd, which is near the spot where most observers have found the bird.

Northern Shrike: Laura Keene reported on 30 Nov that the bird on Greg Emmert’s land in Homerville, Medina continues.

Barn Swallow: Remarkably, two reports: one very active bird at Armleder Park, Hamilton 25 Nov (Kirk Westendorf) and another, a bit more lethargic, 27 Nov near Bowling Green, Wood (Mark Miller).

Nashville Warbler: Robert Hershberger fide Bruce Glick saw an exceptionally late bird north of Berlin, Holmes on 29 Nov.

Yellow-throated Warbler: A bird continues 1 Dec, subsisting on peanut butter, at Michael Rohe’s residence in Spring Grove Village, Hamilton.

Brewer’s Blackbird: John Pogacnik encountered a flock of twelve with cowbirds in southeast Ottawa Co 26 Nov. Seven were among a massive flock of blackbirds along Baughman Rd. at Miami-Whitewater Wetlands, Hamilton 29 Nov (Neill Cade).
