This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for December 22, 2009. Compiler: Gabe Leidy. Email: [log in to unmask]  Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php

Greater White-fronted Goose: One joined a couple Snow Geese, and Canadas, lounging on the beach at Cowan Lake SP, Clinton 11-12 Dec (Larry Gara, Bob Powell).

ROSS‘S GOOSE: On 14-15 Dec, Nathaniel Nye photographed one at the intersection Crystalpond Dr and Splinder Rd in Hilliard, Franklin. Another was found 15 Dec at the Seneca County Jail just west of the intersection of US 224 and SR 100 on the south side of Tiffin - a first for Seneca Co (H.. Thomas Bartlett).

Cackling Goose: One was a first for Sean Williams’campus list 10 Dec at Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware. The next day, he was able to study five at nearby Mingo Park, Delaware. John Pogacnik had one on Lake Erie, from North Perry 13 Dec. Sean Williams found yet another of these little guys at Delaware WA 20 Dec. One was seen on the Rudolph CBC in a pond along the north side of Rte 6 just west of I-75 (Tom Kemp). A bird was on the Toledo CBC at the Toledo Country Club (fide Matt Anderson).

Halrequin Duck: A young male passed North Perry, Lake 11 Dec (John Pogacnik).

Surf Scoter: Eight were counted on the Lakeshore Waterbird Survey 11 Dec (John Pogacnik). Two were off Sims Park, Cuyahoga both 19-20 Dec (Nancy Anderson).
Another, at Bayshore Power Plant, was a welcome addition to the Toledo CBC 20 Dec (fide Matt Anderson).

White-winged Scoter: At least one was dutifully reported at Sims Park, Cuyahoga 12-20 Dec (Nancy Anderson).

Black Scoter: Two were part of the waterbird movement recorded 11 Dec from North Perry, Lake (John Pogacnik). Craig Holt found a fem in Ashtabula 12 Dec. A fem at Sims Park 19-20 Dec kept the scoter sweep alive there (Nancy Anderson).

Long-tailed Duck: Six were tallied on 11 Dec’s Lakeshore Waterbird Survey (John Pogacnik). One was at Bayshore Power Plant, Lucas 20 Dec (fide Matt Anderson).

Red-throated Loon: Three passed Lakeshore MP, Lake on 11 Dec (John Pogacnik), and another the following day. Michael Hatfield and Butch Rockwell observed one at C..J. Brown Dam, Clark 13 Dec.

American White Pelican: A bird was seen “400 meters north of the low dam” on the Great Miami River in Hamilton, Butler as recently 20 Dec (Ken Phillips, Tess Olson); discovered here by Sam Fitton on 14 Dec.

Northern Goshawk: An adult gos was a top notch highlight of the Rudolph CBC. It was seen along Poe Rd, just west of I-75 (Tom Kemp).

Merlin: One flashed by Rob Thorn while on the Marble Cliff bike path near Columbus 13 Dec. Deer Creek WA hosted two on 14 Dec, though the one that hung around the boat ramp area most of the day was the easier to find (Bob Royse). On 18 Dec, Ryan Steiner saw one chasing pigeons at the intersection of Mount Hope Road and Rt 250, Wayne. Since it is CBC season, Merlin reports shall soon popping up everywhere. Lindsay Deering spotted one on the Columbus count “at Wolfe Park on the Scioto River on East Broad St. (almost to Bexley)” 20 Dec and Jim McCormac another on the same count, at Greenlawn Cemetery. Toledo’s CBC had two, both at Ottawa Park (fide Matt Anderson). Three were seen at once 20 Dec at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hamilton - “Two were in the same tree in the "German" section south of West Eighth Street, while a third bird was working the "Irish" section north of West Eighth by itself” (Joshua & Adie Eastlake). Armleder Park, Hamilton had
one 20 Dec (John Zahnen).
Iceland Gull: A 1st/2nd cycle passed North Perry, Lake 11 Dec (John Pogacnik).

Glaucous Gull: Two were seen from “Point Place (Rd. 131)” near Toledo 17 Dec (Steve Stockford).

Snowy Owl: Birding while driving doesn’t get much better than this - while crossing the Sandusky Bay bridge 19 Dec, John Pogacnik spied a Snowy sitting atop one of the light poles on the northeast “section” of the bridge. No follow-up reports were received.

Long-eared Owl: Sean Williams found one at Delaware WA 20 Dec. The number of Long-ears at Maumee Bay SP had grown to four 20 Dec (fide Matt Anderson).

Northern Saw-whet Owl: Jennifer Lenhart stepped onto the porch 14 Dec, and was startled to see a saw-whet owl perfectly silhouetted in her Lakewood, Cuyahoga backyard. Another was at Maumee Bay SP during the Toledo CBC (fide Matt Anderson).

ALLEN’S HUMMINGBIRD: The last installment of the Statewide RBA carried news of a Selasphorus sp. hummingbird near Sugarcreek, Holmes, which had been present since October, but just recently learned of by the birding community. On 11 Dec, bander Allen Chartier netted the bird, as he has many Rufous Hummingbirds in our area over recent years, but this hummer proved to be just a bit different. After measurements and analysis of the tail structure in hand, it was concluded that the bird was an immature male Allen’s Hummingbird, a potential first state record. Photos are up at: http://www.surfbirds.com/cgi-bin/gallery/display.cgi?gallery=gallery10&start=13. The address is 4214 Township Rd 420, and the home is halfway back along the lane, with the feeder in the rear - stand on the right side of the house to view. Mae Miller is the host, and birders are welcome, though asked to stay behind the post, and to park on the main road, because the lane is steep
and quite icy.

Eastern Phoebe: Sean Williams found one along the Olentangy River in Delaware 13 Dec.

Northern Shrike: Greg Emmert continues to host a cooperative shrike on his property in Homerville, Medina, much to the delight of he and his visitors. His e-mail is [log in to unmask], if you’d like to arrange a visit.  Another was at Delaware WA 20 Dec (Sean Williams).

Purple Martin: The Wayne Co. bird remains healthy as of 14 Dec, as it is now being fed mealworms (fide The Bobolink Area RBA).

Gray Catbird: One of these half-hardy mimids was counted at Little Cedar Point NWR 20 Dec, though off-limits to the public.

Brown Thrasher: Two at Delaware WA 20 Dec were a nice addition to that CBC (Sean Williams). The Toledo CBC had one, as well (fide Matt Anderson)..

Yellow-throated Warbler: It is becoming more apparent recently, just how hardy these “southern” warblers are. One appeared at Sue Pryor’s feeders 15 Dec (fide Sally Isacco) and was reported just yesterday, 21 Dec. Her address is 109 Maple Ridge Rd., Chagrin Falls, and the bird can viewed from the road, as the feeders are in the front yard.

Pine Warbler: Another hardy warbler - a Pine was observed on the suet block at Greenlawn Cemetery 22 Dec (Joan Frederick).

Common Yellowthroat: Nancy Howell discovered a male at the Ira Rd. beaver marsh, Cuyahoga Valley NP 14 Dec. Another was found at Navarre Park, Lucas 20 Dec (fide Matt Anderson).

Vesper Sparrow: In recent years, a brushy portion at Bayshore Power Plant has been a magnet for wintering sparrows, including some we wouldn’t expect - such as a Vesper on this year’s CBC 20 Dec (fide Matt Anderson).

Lark Sparrow: One was a great find on the Cincinnati CBC 20 Dec (Ned Keller).

Fox Sparrow: Two were good finds along the Magee boardwalk 15 Dec (Mary Warren). A single was tallied on the Christmas Bird Count at Delaware WA 20 Dec (Sean Williams).

Lincoln’s Sparrow: Three were recorded at Bayshore Power Plant on the Toledo CBC 20 Dec (fide Matt Anderson).

HARRIS’S SPARROW: One was a wonderful addition to Cincinnati’s CBC 20 Dec (Ned Keller), though no more specific details were given.

Indigo Bunting: Joe Faulker has been hosting a young male at his feeders in Somerset Twp, Perry for over a month now. Hopefully it sticks around for those January listers.

Common Redpoll: Dale spied one in Oak Opening MP 16 Dec. Five were in Oregon, Lucas during the Toledo CBC (fide Matt Anderson).

White-winged Crossbill: The first reported following last year’s incursion, Lyn Miller well-described a bird coming to her feeders in Auburn Twp, Geauga 22 Dec.
