Station Road, Brecksville Reservation/CVNP
Observer: Nick Taylor

At 1130, I found a Northern Shrike hunting a large wetland complex inBrecksvile Reservation/Cuyahoga Valley. The location is east of theintersection of Chippewa Creek and Riverview Road. There is an oldtrain stop building painted yellow and a large parking lot. If youfollow the train tracks south of the parking area and over the creek, you find a large wetland on both sides of the train tracks. Redshouldered hawk and Pileated woodpeckers can be seen here in winter. Isaw the Pileated Woodpecker but no hawk.

Anyway, after walking a ways past the wetland along the tracks I turnedaround and walked back to the wetland area. I then noticed a NorthernShrike on the side of the tracks atop some Multiflora Rose bushes. Isnapped photos from a distance and then it took off into the wetlandarea. It alighted on several dead trees and started hunting theperimeter of the wetland complex. After 30 minutes, the bird took offon a long flight to the east-northeast over the tree and toward theriver. I could not relocate the bird.
