Yesterday and today I had a few hours in the morning and visited the Scioto river and O'Shaughnessy Reservoir in and around the NW Columbus suburb of Dublin. Both days were very winter-like, with a lot of still water freezing up or frozen, but the river and most of the reservoir were still open. I stopped at Griggs Dam & Kiwanis Park yesterday, and went further up the river to O'Shaughnessy dam, Twin Lakes Park and Traphagen Nature Preserve today. Notables included:

Great Blue Herons - present all along the river, but the morthlode was 28 roosting along the channel below O'Shaughnessy dam

Waterfowl - not much unexpected, but there were Pied-billed Grebes at several locations along the river, as well as 5 Gadwall on the reservoir near the Zoo. Twin Lakes had 4 Hooded Mergansers & a female Goldeneye, but the quarries north of there were surprisingly empty.

Raptors - no eagles, but had quite a few Cooper's and Red-tails at different areas along the river & reservoir.

Gulls - Ring-bills were common but not abundant, while 20+ Bonapartes were flying & fishing along the Reservoir between the dam & Home Rd.

Thrushes - the only big concentration of Robins was 140-150 in the honeysuckle bushes below Griggs dam. Had Bluebirds at several locations, including a pair quarreling with a Mockingbird over some berry-filled bushes at Twin Lakes.

Creepers,Wrens - Brown Creepers were common, with birds at every location, often in numbers; tops were 5 in the woods below Griggs dam. Carolina Wrens in many spots, but also had Winter Wrens at both Kiwanis and twin lakes.

Sparrows - surprisingly few, but both White-throated & Tree Sparrows were widespread. Most unusual was a Swamp sparrow at Twin Lakes.
