Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see:

EIDER SP: John Pogacnik reported an unidentified fem/imm eider sp from Lakeshore MP, Lake 6 Dec. It passed with a group of six Surf Scoters.

Surf Scoter: At least two were off Sims Park, Cuyahoga 5 Dec (Bill Whan et al, fide Nancy Anderson).

White-winged Scoter: One completed the scoter sweep at Sims Park, Cuyahoga 5 Dec (Nancy Anderson).

Black Scoter: Three fem at Berlin Reservoir, Mahoning/Portage 30 Nov made for a nice inland tally (Craig Holt). Ten continue at Sims Park, Cuyahoga 5 Dec (Nancy Anderson, Bill Whan et al). Three were seen from oval parking lot at Edgewater Beach SP, Cuyahoga 5 Dec (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy).

Red-throated Loon: Jerry Talkington counted a whopping SEVENTEEN from Madison Township Park, Lake 7 Dec. A bird floated by Lakeshore Reservation, Lake 5 Dec (John Pogacnik).

American White Pelican: Jill Bowers photographed one at Grand Lake St. Mary’s 6 Dec.

Great Egret: A hardy bird continues to linger at Mosquito Lake through 5 Dec (Craig Holt).

American Avocet: The bird at Cullen Park in Toledo continued its unprecedented stay through at least 5 Dec (Chuck Anderson, Matt Kemp).

Dark-legged Peep Sp: Unprecedented for the date was a Western/Semipalmated Sandpiper discovered on the beach at Maumee Bay SP 5 Dec (Chuck Anderson, Matt Kemp). Chuck provided a video with an image still of the bird on Rarebird.org. The following day, Dale ? relocated the bird in the same spot, and too photographed it, his photo also posted on Rarebird.

Long-billed Dowitcher: A flock of five passed by Huron Pier 5 Dec (Gabe Leidy).

Iceland Gull: Larry Richardson reported the first white winger at Oberlin this season, a 1st/2nd cycle on 8 Dec. Greg Links found two first-cycles along the Ottawa River in Toledo 6 Dec, see directions below.

Lesser Black-backed Gull: An adult was at Berlin Lake, Mahoning/Portage 30 Nov (Craig Holt). Along Lake Erie, numbers grew to four at Avon Lake Power Plant, Lorain 5 Dec (Bill Whan et al), while a single adult rested on the docks at Lorain Harbor the same day (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy). One passed Lakeshore Reservation 6 Dec (John Pogacnik). Two were present at Oberlin Reservoir 8 Dec (Larry Richardson). This week’s high count came from the Toledo-area, where 7-8 were seen 6 Dec on the Ottawa River. Greg suggests checking the river from behind the bar at Suder and Shoreland Rds and also at the River Run Marina along Edgewater Rd. on the opposite side of the river. The previous day, Matt Kemp/Chuck Anderson saw four along Ottawa River Rd near 117th St. To say this species has expanded ridiculously in recent years would be an understatement.

Glaucous Gull: An adult was present 6 Dec at River Run Marina in Toledo - see above for directions.

Golden Eagle: An injured immature Golden was found in Winchester, Adams 4 Dec and transferred to RAPTOR rehabilitation center in Cincinnati (Jeff Hays). Another report came in of an adult flying over SR 30 south of Orville 3 Dec (fide Bobolink-area RBA).

Merlin: Jen Brumfield took some wonderful close-ups of one of the males at Calvary Cemetery, Cuyahoga last week. Another Merlin was found in Hamilton (Joshua Eastlake).

Northern Saw-whet Owl: Tim Tolford banded three at Clear Creek MP, Hocking/Fairfield 5 Dec.

Long-eared Owl: Two continue at Maumee Bay SP, in the woodlot at the end of Bay Shore Dr, as of 5 Dec (Chuck Anderson, Matt Kemp).

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD: The latest Bobolink-area bird continues as of 5 Dec, fide The Bobolink-area RBA. This particular presumed Rufous hummer has apparently been on location at the home of May Miller northwest of Sugarcreek, Holmes since August. The address is 4214 Township Rd 420, and the home is halfway back along the lane, with the feeder in the rear - stand on the right side of the house to view.

Northern Shrike: Tom Bartlett found one at Killdeer Plains 4 Dec - “on CH 71 about 1/4 mile east of CH 115 on the north side of the road.” One was a very neat backyard bird for Matthew Studebaker 4 Dec in Solon, Cuyahoga. A bird continues to visit Greg Emmert’s property in Homerville, Medina 7 Dec - e-mail him at [log in to unmask] to arrange a visit. One at Maumee Bay SP 5 Dec was along the road between the hill and the campground (Chuck Anderson, Matt Kemp).

Purple Martin: The bird along Cunningham Rd. in Apple Creek, Wayne remains through 5 Dec (Bobolink-area RBA).

Ruby-crowned Kinglet: One was reported from Bass Island/Little Miami Scenic Trail, Hamilton 5 Dec (Joshua Eastlake).

Yellow Warbler: Bizarrely, two reports emerged from the Bobolink-area this week. A male was seen by James F. Yoder southwest of Walnut Creek, Holmes and a fem/imm by an unknown observer earlier in the week within the Bobolink-region (fide Bobolink-area RBA).

Yellow-throated Warbler: The Cincinnati-area Yellow-throated Warbler was last seen 5 Dec - at Jack Berninger’s feeder in Cleves, Hamilton.

Good birding -
Gabe Leidy
