Jack Stenger, Sylvie Hundley, Matthew, and I went on a late evening last minute jaunt to Big Island Wildlife Area to look for Short-Eared Owls. Jack guaranteed it, but I am always leery of that sort of thing, haha. Sure enough though, right near where Espyville (t.h.84) and rt. 95 (looking north) intersect at about 5:30pm we had awesome looks at a female SHORT-EARED OWL. Then in the field just to the south we saw 2 or 3 more of them. Always exciting, I love to watch this aerobatic species, but it was Sylvie's first so her excitement made it even better. I was surprised they were out, the winds were strong and oh so cold, but it was worth the trip. I think these are about the first reported this fall, get out and check your local hotspots for these awesome beasts.
Good birding cheers,
Ben Warner
