I did a big loop around Mahoning Co. yesterday, checking lakes for waterbirds and keeping an eye out for raptors, shrike, etc. while driving the rural areas.  First stop was Evans L.  It was slow with 2 gadwalls, 68 hooded mergansers, pied-billed grebe, and 60 Am. coots present.  Just south of there I got a nice look at a sharp-shinned hawk.  Pine L. was better, with many Canada geese, mallards, 10 Am. black ducks, 4 gadwalls, n. pintail, 25 n. shovelers, 20 green-winged teal, 22 buffleheads, 10 hooded mergansers, 15 ruddy ducks, ad. bald eagle, red-tailed hawk, and a blackbird flock w/100 red-wings, 200 c. grackles, and a few brown-headed cowbirds.  Next I went to Beaver Twp., where ponds and wetlands held 15 green-winged teal, ring-necked duck, ruddy ducks, Am. coot, and 4 killdeer.  Next I headed west toward Berlin Res.  On the way I saw red-shouldered hawk and e. bluebirds in Ellsworth Twp.  I viewed Berlin Res. at the Rte. 224 causeway,
there were finally fowl gathered there.  Birds present were canvasback, ring-necked duck, 52 lesser scaup, 3 female BLACK SCOTERS, 7 buffleheads, 6 gadwalls, 300 Bonaparte's gulls, and 400 ring-billed gulls.  The black scoters also flew over into Portage Co. and landed, providing a rare record in that county as well.  With daylight dwindling, I booked it to L. Milton next.  Birds there included 22 Am. black ducks, lesser scaup, c. goldeneye, 62 hooded mergansers, 3 common mergansers, red-breasted merganser, c. loon, pied-billed grebe, Cooper's hawk, 50 Bonaparte's gulls, ring-billed gulls, 50 herring gulls, and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.  It was swimming around w/herrings at the north end of the lake.  So on the day I saw very few raptors (but nice diversity), no shrike, and a fine 16 species of ducks.  Later, Craig
