I started day 3 following up on some good birds reported on the East Fork State Park Christmas Count. At the end of day three I had 75 birds on my list. A quick stop at Grand Valley yielded Yellow-bellied Sapsucker-1 in the park at the south edge of the south pond. I looked for but did not find Northern Shovelers. Unfortunately, I did not find the Brown Thrasher and White-crowned Sparrows at the power lines south east of Bethel, reported by Bob Foppe and Donald Morse on the Christmas Count, but I did find one White-crowned Sparrow along the road near the corner where they also reported American Pipits on the count. I did not find the pipits either. I then went to Grant Lake as I worked my way north and east toward, Highland Stone and Gravel, Highland County, the quarry southeast of Hillsboro. I didn't find anything new at Grant Lake, so I headed toward the quarry near Hillsboro. In the park across from the office, there were 6 Sandhill Cranes, and while driving around south of the area, I found a flock of 32 more. In the gravel pit area, there was a Killdeer-1, a Northern Harrier-1 in the grassy areas around the pits, and a flock of Horned Larks-20 in a harvested soybean field. I headed back to Cincinnati, and stopped again at Grand Valley looking for Northern Shoveler. No luck. There was still enough light to stop at Armeleder Park before dark. There I added Eastern Meadowlark-3 and also saw a flock of 20 Tree Sparrows.

At the end of day three, I was well on track to get to 100 with a total of 75.

However, this quest was interrupted January 09 -12 by a successful trip to south Texas to see the Bare-throated Tiger Heron.
