I think there is a movement of house finches. When I was banding I saw a
definite decline in numbers in mid September. I saw very modest numbers in
the winter and a sharp increase in April. This year was odd in that I have
had quite a few house finches all winter. There has been a slight decline
since the first week of January, but I am definitely seeing a lot more this
winter than in quite a few winters. Typically I see no more than 20-30
birds in the winter. This year I have been seeing twice that number. I
never did see a decrease this past September. I feed birds year round and
typically in the winter my feeders don't drop as much as they do in the
summer. This year has been different. There have been a lot more
goldfinches this winter also.
