A northern shrike and hairy woodpecker got into it at the top of a large
willow at Walter C. Best Preserve S of Chardon on Rt 44. The woodpecker
started it, flying at the shrike, spreading its wings, and calling. The
shrike responded in kind. After several posturings, the shrike flew down
to the lower reaches of the tree, and the hairy moved around to several
area trees before resuming calling and drumming next to the Best Sand
property. The shrike can frequently be seen from the rear parking area.

Not much else was out; pairs of redheads and mallards in the Best Sand
settling pond.
