Hi all,
There are already plenty of gigantic wind turbines on the Canadian shore of
Lake Erie, across from Ohio. I don't know what if any bird mortality
studies have been done there, or if pre-construction bird studies were done.
In anticipation of potential turbines in Ohio waters of Lake Erie, the Ohio
Division of Wildlife has been conducting what may be the most comprehensive
analysis of bird patterns in a potential turbine site yet done. Keith Lott,
a biologist with ODOW, orchestrated the study and gathered lots of
fascinating data. Keith will present results of his aerial survey work over
Lake Erie at the upcoming Waterfowl Symposium, hosted by Columbus Audubon
and the Ohio Ornithological Society.
There will be plenty of other great speakers and interesting programs,
capped by Dr. Azzam Alwash of Iraq, the Saturday evening keynote. Alwash
has been instrumental in restoring the massive wetlands between the Tigris
and Euphrates rivers, a major hotbed of biological diversity in that part
of the world. Lest you think we have little in common with Iraqi wetlands,
at least ten species of waterfowl that occur in Ohio also occur there.
Azzam Alwash is a great speaker and a fascinating individual, and his work
ranks high in importance among the world's current environmental
restoration projects.
For those of you into social affairs involving music and meeting fellow
birders, Bill Thompson, Julie Zickefoose, and their band the Swinging
Orangatangs (they put the "tang" in orangatan) will be playing a gig Friday
night.
It all takes place at the new Grange Insurance Audubon Center on the banks
of the Scioto River in Columbus the weekend of February 26-28. Details and
registration are at the OOS website: http://www.ohiobirds.org/
Online registration is available at the Columbus Audubon website:
