Don't think that since the California wind farms have been around for thirty years that it means that the birds have adapted. Closer to the truth is that the turbines exact a terrible annual toll. However, hard statistics are hard to come by. The people who operate these farms frown on data collection of statistics like bird mortality. Those who would collect such data have been run off.

Note: I don't have any serious studies to cite, but I recall reading about the subject a couple years ago on CALBIRDS or some similar listserv. The discussion centered around the direct threat of an ill-conceived glass "fence" built right next to the Bolsa Chica Nature Preserve in Orange County. The thread diverted into the subject of other man-made structures, such as wind farms, and the toll they take.

I have never seen statistics as far as problems with birds and wind turbines
but for some reason it seems birds would have a more difficult time
navigating through the maze of skyscrapers in say downtown Cleveland. It's
interesting that as hideous as cell phone towers are I actually think these
have benefited birds. Granted there are no moving parts but I have seen two
successful nesting Ospreys on these monstrosities. Last spring at my work I
witnessed an Osprey attempting to build a nest on a tower until two Eagles
chased it off only never to return. They also make excellent perches for
Raptors. I too have seen the wind farms in Northern California as I passed
them back in the early 80's. They have had them for 30 years? hmmmmmmm.
Birds seem to have an uncanny way of adapting and maybe the turbines will
present only a slight change of direction to the east or west coming off the
lake.
