I will be spending a few days in Columbus next week while my husband takes a
chair making course. I would like to do some birding while I'm up there. Can
some of you give me some ideas of places to bird and directions to them? I
am open to travelling anywhere around the outer belt.

We have the regulars here at the feeders but we do have a new regular. A
Hairy Woodpecker has found the feeders and is making daily visits now. And
the other night while I was down in our basement office talking to my
husband, I though I caught a glimpse of some motion by our big (holds about
25 lbs.) feeder. So I went over to the glass door and turned on the outside
light. What I found was two flying squirrels clinging to the hardware cloth
face of the feeder feasting on the black oil sunflower seed. They sure were
cute. We see them at the feeders every few years when we have a snow storm
pass through.

Noticeably absent so far this winter have been Juncos and Towhees. Both are
usually present with the snow cover. Not so this year. We have had what
appears to be a young Pileated Woodpecker hanging around the house. It has
come in close to investigate the feeders but hasn't been a regular visitor
yet. A young Red-Shouldered Hawk has also been hanging around the yard. It
has made some attempts to find food under the leaves and snow but has not
been successful when I have been watching. There is a RSH nest about 75 feet
from the house so it's not surprising to see them around, just not usually
in the yard.
