I stopped at both Blendon Woods and at Hoover dam this morning to gauge the effect of the snowfall on feeder birds and waterbirds. At Blendon, lots of birds were along the trails, but even more were around the Nature center feeders. There was nothing terribly unusual in the hour that I was present, but 7-8 Tree Sparrows and 1 Grackle were somewhat unusual at the feeders. Thoreau Lake had only a small patch of open water, and it held wall-to-wall Canada Geese (600) and Black Ducks (300), with only a few Mallards thrown into the mix.

Hoover dam had far fewer landbirds, which wasn't much of a surprise since there are no feeders here. Much of the southern reservoir is still open above the dam, but most of the interesting birds were in the spillway and river channel below the dam. These included:

Great Blue Heron - 9
Canada Geese - 200
Wood Duck - 1
Mallard - 60
Black Duck - 2
N.Shoveler - 20
Gadwall - 2
Amer.Wigeon - 16
Bufflehead - 2
C.Goldeneye - 2
Hooded Merganser - 12

Above the dam were several large flocks of Canada Geese (perhaps 300 total) and a few small flocks of gulls (mostly Ring-bills, but with 2-3 Herring as well). A hike around the nearby disc golf course found mostly chickadee flocks, but there was 1 Brown Creeper with them, and there was a single Hermit Thrush in a berry bush.
