The gray catbird seen at my feeders on Friday showed up once on Saturday and
was not seen on Sunday. There is a fair amount of fruit along the cliff so
it is probably staying there. On Saturday very few birds came to the
feeders and Sunday the feeders were really loaded with birds. No redpolls
were seen either day. I saw no siskins Saturday, but there were a couple
yesterday. The two towhees are the only birds that have been regular. They
were here both days.

There was no waterbird survey as the lake was mostly ice covered both days.
On Saturday the lake was frozen for about 3/4 of a mile. Yesterday it
started to break up and this morning there is a lot of open water.
Satellite maps are showing that the lake is frozen from the islands west and
along the shore. The middle is still pretty much open. The warming trend
later this week will probably break up the ice more. What this means is
unless there are a lot of fish, dead or alive, at East 72nd I doubt that
things are going to pick up there much this week. Yesterday afternoon at
East 72nd there was adult glaucous and lesser black-backed and a fair number
of the other common gulls.
