Hey folks,
There are still several student scholarships available for the upcoming
Waterfowl Symposium in Columbus at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center
February 26-28. The "official deadline" to apply for the student
scholarship is Monday, February 15th. But if an interested young birder
steps forward, they would be welcomed!
If you know of a deserving student (up to age 18), child, grandchild, etc,
please pass this message on. The scholarships are sponsored by OOS and
Columbus Audubon Society: both groups hope every available scholarship is
claimed!
To apply, contact either Nadya Bennett ([log in to unmask]) or Kathy
McDonald ([log in to unmask]).
For more information on this event, go to either the Ohio Ornithological
Society website
(www.ohiobirds.org/calendar/society_events/current/waterfowl.php) or visit
the CAS website (www.columbusaudubon.org/).
Registration is still underway for the 18 and older crowd! Don't forget
about the Friday night portion of the weekend. If you can't attend the
"entire" weekend for $80, you can join the festivities on Friday night for
only $10: Friday is a fundraiser for Nature Iraq featuring The Swinging
Orangutangs (a six-piece rock/funk dance band which includes OOS members
Julie Zickefoose and Bill Thompson III). Mendocino Brewing Company is
offering several of their fine brews (including Blackhawk Stout and Red Tail
Ale) on Friday evening. Saturday, there will be SEVEN speakers including Dr.
Azzam Alwash, CEO of Nature Iraq. Field trips on Sunday (yes, we are hoping
for a thaw).
The Waterfowl Symposium in grateful for additional sponsorship from The
Columbus Zoo and Aquarium: Dr. Gwen Myers will share her research on
Spectacled Eiders during the Saturday portion of the weekend.

In Appreciation,
Ann Oliver,
Cincinnati
