Have a look at the AOU's Committee on classification and nomenclature is
considering at http://www.aou.org/committees/nacc/proposals/2009-A.pdf
I posted something earlier about their thinking to split the winter wren
into new eastern and western species, and about the proposal to split
out a red crossbill form from Idaho (probably leading to a number of new
species of 'red crossbill' eventually), but matters have advanced, and
there is also news about a possible split in the western scrub jay now.
There are the usual necessary but hardly momentous tinkerings with
scientific names (is it 'bairdi' or 'bairdii'?) too. No announcement
will be official till publication in July at the earliest, but in many
ways these early treatments are often more interesting and informative
than the terser official notices.
