I spent the afternoon yesterday birding areas nearby in eastern Mahoning Co. Activity was quite good until the latest snowstorm arrived around 4:00 PM. Roadside edges exposed by snow plows were like bird magnets in a number of spots. I had the same experience at Mosquito WA a few days ago, too. In Coitsville Twp. were: 195 Canada geese, 5 mallards (on a very small stream), sharp-shinned hawk, 3 red-shouldered hawks, 3 red-tailed hawks, Am. kestrel, n. flicker, 6 e. bluebirds, 7 Am. robins, a singing n. mockingbird, 4 e. towhees (my first ones this winter), 20 Am. tree sparrows, 3 song sparrows, 2 white-throated sparrows, and 20 dark-eyed juncos. In adjacent northern Poland Twp. were 10 wild turkeys, an imm Cooper's hawk, and another e. towhee. Then I went down to Lowellville, and checked the Mahoning R. from there to Struthers. It held Canada geese, mallards, 2 buffleheads, 9 c. goldeneyes, 6 hooded mergansers, and pied-billed grebe. I
went down to Evans L. next, it was completely frozen with some ring-billed & herring gulls roosting on the ice. The snow had hit hard by then, so I went over to take a quick look in Beaver Twp. at the lake by Mill Creek along Western Reserve Rd. It still has a big open-water hole, and crammed into and around it were 650+ Canada geese. I suppose there were other waterfowl too, but I only took a minute to look before heading home.
