This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for February 1, 2010. Compiler: Gabe Leidy. Email: [log in to unmask]

Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php

Snow Goose: The West Chester IKEA bird - along Mulhauser Rd, Hamilton - continues 29 Jan (Jay Lehman).

Cackling Goose: Cacklers came in twos for Laura Keene 28 Jan at Killdeer and Sean Williams 31 Jan at Ohio Wesleyan, Delaware.

Great Egret: Most noteworthy was a bird along the Scioto River at Griggs Preserve, Franklin 1 Feb (Craig Moore). Individuals seem to be adapting more toward northern winters in recent years.

Northern Goshawk: A young bird was briefly perched on a roadside telephone wire 27 Jan along Howe Rd., Strongsville, Cuyahoga. The location was appx. ½ mile south of Strongsville Mall (Gabe Leidy).

Golden Eagle: The Wilds Golden was found near its recent haunt - along Coal Haul Rd, near the Rural Dale Rd intersection - 25 Jan by Laura Keene.

Merlin: Lou Gardella verified at least two at Calvary Cemetery 29 Jan. Steve & Beth Cagan found the Lakeview Cemetery bird in Section 2 on 30 Jan. The Greenlawn Cemetery Merlin continued 31 Jan (Bob Baran). And, a fem. was found at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hamilton, “in the "Old Single" section just north of St Anthony near W 8th and Enright” 30 Jan (Jim & Patricia Terlinden). These sightings break down to one simple mathematical equation - cemeteries = Merlins - try it out.

Iceland Gull: Paul Hurtado found a darker first-cycle at E. 72nd St. 28 Jan. The Maumee River continues to attract a few white-wingers, including an ad. Iceland at Ostego Park 24 Jan (John Habig, Jay Lehman). Most notable was a flyover first-cycle on the Ohio Wesleyan campus, Delaware 31 Jan (Sean Williams).

Glaucous Gull: A smattering of reports again this week. A bird was at ice-locked Lorain Harbor 27 Jan (Craig Caldwell). E. 72nd St. hosted a solitary ad. Jan (Paul Hurtado). Along the Maumee River, there were singles at the ODNR boat ramp and Providence Dam 24 Jan (John Habig, Jay Lehman), and a second-yr at Providence 28 Jan (Tom Kemp). A 1st/2nd-cycle was well-described 27 Jan at Armleder Park, Hamilton by Paul Krusling - a most notable sighting for this corner of the state. Berlin Reservoir, a good inland gulling spot, hosted one 30 Jan, observed from the SR 224 bridge (Bobolink Area RBA). Seems Lake Erie is not necessarily the place to be looking for white-winged gulls this winter.

Long-eared Owl: Two remain on location at Killdeer Plains - “in the spruce wind break on the east side of the driveway into the red barn located east of the parking lot for the owl grove along CH 75 (Dan Gesualdo, Jay Lehman).”

Northern Shrike: Killdeer Plains is hosting at least one bird this winter, reported most recently on CR 115 just past the area headquarters 26 Jan (Dan Gesualdo). Jay Lehman had the same, or another bird, 17 Jan: “The Northern Shrike was along CH 68 (Wyandot Marion Road in Map Quest) east of the ponds but west of Washburn Road. I found the bird at 12:30 pm just east of the last Pond 27 pull off on the north side of Wyandot Marion Road.” One has been around the intersection of Valley & Clark Rds. within Killbuck Marsh WA (Bobolink Area RBA).

Indigo Bunting: The male Indigo over wintering in Somerset, Perry was last reported and photographed 25 Jan by Laura Keene.

Common Redpoll: One is visiting a southern Wayne Co. feeder as of late 30 Jan (Bobolink Area RBA).
