A sharp shinned hawk had just killed a female cardinal and
was vigorously plucking at the breast feathers when I rounded the corner
and saw it in my driveway.

Wary, but determined, it continued plucking for a few seconds until
two crows flew in, cawing, eager to participate in the meal. The
sharpie flew into the little
ravine a few feet away, with the dead bird, but lost it to the crow.

The crow flew off, the cardinal firmly grasped in it's toes. The
sharpie remained in the
place where it lost it's meal, moving around, perhaps looking for
nonexistent scraps.
