This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for March 21, 2010. Compiler: Gabe Leidy. Email: [log in to unmask]

Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php

Snow Goose: A white-phase was a highlight on the Darke Co. Duck Drive 13 Mar (Regina Schieltz, et al). One was found along US 250 near I-77 15 Mar and two “blue” geese hung around Millersburg, Holmes Co. 13-14 Mar (fide The Bobolink Area RBA).

Eurasian Wigeon: The Paulding Co. bird was last reported at the sewage lagoons 12 Mar (Doug & Micki Dunakin).

Surf Scoter: Caesar Creek SP, Warren Co. hosted a fem/imm 20 Mar (Rick Asamoto).

Long-tailed Duck: St. Patrick’s Day brought the first wave: two males visited Wellington Reservoir, Lorain Co. (Dane Adams), “several” were at Lake Medina, Medina Co. (Jen Brumfield), Charlie Bombaci discovered a male at Delaware WA, Delaware Co, and Wright Marsh, Holmes Co. was visited by yet another male (Edward Hostetler). These birds didn’t dawdle, but Sunday brought a batch of fresh reports - a pair of males (breeding and non-breeding plumage) at West Branch Reservoir, Portage Co. (Aaron Bartley), another male at Pymatuning Reservoir, on the Ohio side (Cole DiFabio, et al), and a pair at LaDue Reservoir, Geauga Co. (Larry Rosche, Judy Semroc).

Merlin: Time is running out for our over-wintering birds, but three were still in their usual sections at Calvary Cemetery, Cuyahoga Co. 15 Mar (Lou Gardella), as was the bird at Old St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hamilton Co. 13 Mar (Bill Zimmerman).

Lesser Black-backed Gull: Inland Lessers included three in rural Lorain Co. 13 Mar (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy) and one on the beach at Delaware SP 17-21 Mar (Sean Williams).

Glaucous Gull: An adult was viewed from the Sandusky Bay bridge 13 Mar (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy). Larry Richardson found another at Bradstreet Landing, Cuyahoga Co. 20 Mar.

Long-eared Owl: The bird along TR 177 east of New Bedford, Coshocton Co. continued through at least 17 Mar (fide The Bobolink Area RBA).

Northern Saw-whet Owl: John Pogacnik discovered one a Girdled Rd. Reservation, Lake Co. 16 Mar, an area where they have been known to breed in the past.

Northern Shrike: One was found by Shane Roberts and Mary Warren on the Magee Marsh census 16 Mar; perhaps it is haunting an offlimits part of the refuge this winter, as I don’t recall any other reports this year. Russell Reynolds relocated the Killdeer Plains shrike 20 Mar on CR-71.

“Oregon” Junco: Jeff Sires reported a male of this race on his Cincinnati-area property 13 Mar.

White-winged Crossbill: Only the second reported this winter - John Pogacnik found one singing deep within Girdled Rd. Reservation, Lake Co. 16 Mar. It was along the Buckeye Trail, at least two miles from the start, near a picnic table along the creek.
