This afternoon I visited Sharon Woods Metro Park (Franklin County) and the Delaware Wildlife Area (Delaware County) looking for new arrivals. The signs that spring is here for real were present at Sharon Woods. I located my first Brown Thrasher of the year for Sharon Woods. It was singing from the top of a tall shrub on one side of the trail and a Northern Mockingbird was belting away from a shrub on the opposite side. At one of the bridges along the Spring Creek Trail Eastern Phoebe’s were carrying nest materials underneath. At area close to the other bridge on the trail I observed a pair of Hooded Mergansers. They were doing the species mating display. It will be interesting to watch for signs whether the hen nests along Spring Creek. The drake will be off to places unknown to enjoy the summer while the hen is left to incubate the eggs and raise the brood. There is something “fowl” about this arrangement. Several Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and a Barred Owl were also spotted along the trail.

On the way to the Delaware Wildlife Area I checked out the nest platforms at Hogback Road. There were 4 Osprey present, two each on two of the platforms. Dick Tuttle’s Osprey Nursery.

At the Delaware Wildlife Area there was a nice variety of waterfowl. Area A was populated with dabbling ducks and a couple of shorebird species. Delaware Lake off Area B was populated with diving ducks and gulls.
