Hi all,

Many of you, even in the Columbus area, may not be aware of the Columbus Natural History Society, which meets on the second Monday of the month at the OSU Museum of Biological Diversity. Meetings start at 7:30 pm, and the main feature is always a program on some facet of natural history, often including birds and bird-related topics. There is no charge and guests are always welcome.

This coming Monday, March 8th, I am slated to give a program on the Sandusky Plains, the formerly vast now mostly destroyed wet prairie that blanketed a large area around Marion. The Sandusky Plains is best known to birders by its two largest remnants: Big Island and Killdeer Plains wildlife areas. Most of this talk will focus on the "Hardin County wetlands" that Rick Counts brought to everyone's attention with all of the great finds that he made there, such as nesting Wilson's Phalaropes. This project is without doubt one of the most interesting and successful wetland restorations ever done in Ohio. The talk focuses not only on avian response, but the big picture view of what such restorations mean to Ohio and even beyond our borders.

The OSU Museum of Biological Diversity is located at 1315 Kinnear Road, Columbus, 43212.

Jim
