This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for March 11, 2010.  Compiler: Gabe Leidy. Email: [log in to unmask]

Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php

Snow Goose: All reports: 7 Mar one blue-phase at Killdeer Plains (Cheryl Harner, et al), 24 totaled on the Ottawa NWR census 7 Mar (Doug Vogus et al), and “a few” at Cedar Point Causeway, Erie Co. 8 Mar (Becky Cullen).

Ross’s Goose: Becky Cullen spied one from the Cedar Point Causeway, Erie Co. 8 Mar, along with some Snow Geese.

Eurasian Wigeon: The bird at T.J. Evans Park, Licking Co. was last observed 6 Mar (Margaret Bowman) - likely a county first - and another has shown up at Paulding Sewage Lagoons 10-11 Mar, the first in this county since 1982 (Doug & Micki Duankin)!

Least Sandpiper: At least one has survived the onslaught of a brutal Ohio winter, last reported 6 Mar on the Great Miami River in Fairfield, Butler Co. (Mike Busam, Charlie Saunders).

Golden Eagle: The wily Killdeer juv. was encountered 7 Mar by Cheryl Harner, et al.

Merlin: All three of the Merlins wintering at Calvary Cemetery, Cuyahoga Co. were located by Lou Gardella the evening of 7 Mar. The “brown trail” at Swan Creek Metropark, Lucas Co. hosted one 3 Mar (Mark & Sherry Plessner). A male continues to haunt Old St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hamilton Co. as of 5 Mar (Bill Zimmerman).

Barn Owl: Bob Powell reported that the Clinton Co. bird flew the barn 3 Mar.

Long-eared Owl: 7 Mar marked the most recent report from the Owl Grove at Killdeer Plains WA (fide Cheryl Harner); don’t dally - these birds will probably be gone soon. One is also being seen along Township Rd. 177 east of Holmesville, Holmes Co. - in the big hemlock right along the road (fide Bobolink Area RBA).

SPOTTED TOWHEE: Last visited the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Miller early 8 Mar. Many thanks to the tenants, who allowed 346 visitors into their home!
