I stopped at this State Nature Preserve south of Columbus this morning, along with some nearby areas, to look for early migrants, with some success. The cold weather made it feel like early April at least, and migration seemed stuck on that period, with lots of temperate migrants and only a few neotropicals. Highlights included:

Waterfowl - hardly any, either at Stage's Pond or at Mackey Ford along the Scioto River north of there. Pairs of Wood Ducks were about the only common duck.

Raptors - a single Osprey was cruising down Walnut Creek west of Ashville, while the only Kestrel of the morning was at nearby Hoover Rd. Red-tails were abundant, especially as the wind picked up later in the morning.

woodpeckers - a single sapsucker was at Stage's Pond, while a pair of Pileateds livened up Mackey Ford. LOTS of courting and nest-digging Red-bellies and Downies at both sites.

FLycatchers - Phoebes were widespread, but more interesting was a FOS Wood Pewee along Walnut Creek east of Ashville

SWallows - Tree Swallows and Rough-winged were widespread, and a single BankSwallow was at Stages Pond, while a Purple Martin was flying over Mackey Ford.

Kinglets,Gnatcatchers - plenty of Ruby-crowns at several locations, and similar numbers of Gnatcatchers, but no Golden-crowns

Thrushes - suspiciously absent, except for omnipresent American Robins

Mimids - still no Catbirds, but Brown Thrashers were singing at Stage's Pond and at Little Walnut

Warblers - a FOS Yellow Warbler was singing in the field at Stage's Pond, while the woods there had 6+ Yellow-rumps. Ashville and Mackey Ford had Yellow-throated Warblers.

Sparrows - a Vesper Sparrow was singing from the field east of Stages Pond, while Field Sparrows were abundant there. White-throateds were at both Stages Pond (6) and Mackey Ford (2).
