I made a quick trip to Greenlawn Sat. afternoon to see if the great horned owlets (sadly, only 2 of the 3 remain) had fledged since Thursday evening and indeed they had, high on opposite sides of the nest tree--but that wasn't the biggest thrill of the day.  Some sharp- eyed and generous birders whose names I neglected to get were gathered around a spotting scope trained on a whip-poor-will, snoozing soundly in plain view on the branch of a small tree just beyond the rock marking the Bridge trail.  Wow!  The bird seemed oblivious to the commotion and was still there later after all the excited humans had packed up and left.  First one I'd seen since the summer after my sixth grade in school, and that was more decades ago than I care to contemplate!  Good birding!  Pam Unger
