This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for April 22, 2010. Compiler: Gabe Leidy. Email: [log in to unmask]

Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see:
Long-tailed Duck: A late addition to the Long-tailed Duck flight was a bird off Lakewood Park, Cuyahoga Co. 27 Mar (Nancy Ortman). Another lakefront Oldsquaw passed Lakeshore MP, Lake Co. 20 Apr.

Red-throated Loon: Rick Asamoto and John Habig found one at Caesar Creek SP, Warren Co. 10 Apr, where it remained 11-12 Apr (Laura Keene, Jared Merriman). A Lake Erie aerial survey turned up a bird 20 Apr (John Pogacnik).

Red-necked Grebe: John Pogacnik’s lake watch from North Perry, Lake Co. tallied a solo bird 11 Apr.

Eared Grebe: Rick Asamoto and John Habig’s patrol of southwestern reservoirs turned up an Eared at Buck Creek SP, Clark Co. 11 Apr.

American Bittern: Freshly arrived/migrant bitterns were observed at Girdled Rd. Reservation, Lake Co. 9 Apr (John Pogacnik), Franklin Square Marsh, Columbiana Co. 14 Apr (Bob & Denise Lane), Mentor Marsh’s Wake Robin Trail, Lake Co. 18 Apr (Marilyn Rohr), and Spring Valley WA, Warren/Greene Co. 20 Apr (John Habig).

Snowy Egret: A locally rare Snowy discovered the afternoon of 9 Apr at Merwin St., Cuyahoga Co. by Tom & Mary Anne Romito perfectly exemplified the “Patagonia Picnic Table Effect.”

Little Blue Heron: Adam Milenski’s find, at the night-heron roost along Merwin St., Cuyahoga Co. 9 Apr, was quite novel for the area; it was observed later by Paula Lozano and Tom & Mary Anne Romito. Matt Valencic relocated it the following day.

Cattle Egret: Aaron Bartley observed one foraging at Stange Rd. and SR 2, Lucas Co. 17 Apr. Eight were present along “Manhattan Blvd between Jeep Parkway and New York” in Lucas Co. 16-17 Apr (Mark Faust, Mark & Sherry Plessner).

Yellow-crowned Night-Heron: Dave Horn observed this species at its traditional Bexley (Columbus), Franklin Co. spot 17 Apr.

MISSISSIPPI KITE: Robert Hershberger observed a early flyover in Holmes Co. last week (exact date uncertain).

Merlin: A female buzzed the hawk tower at Magee 10 Apr (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy). A male preyed on one of Jay Wooten’s feeder guests 16 Apr in Salem, Columbiana Co. One was observed on Kelley’s Island 18 Apr (Tom & Paula Bartlett).

Lesser Black-backed Gull: Kenn Kaufman recorded singles at East Harbor SP, Ottawa Co. and the Ottawa Co. landfill along Rt. 163 east of Oak Harbor 20 Apr.

Glaucous Gull: A lingering 2nd-yr. bird passed North Perry, Lake Co. 11 Apr (John Pogacnik).

EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE: Troy Shively noted a pair of returning collared-doves along SR 235 in Logan Co., specifically, near Indian Lake High School’s baseball diamonds 20 Apr. While elusive, he has recorded the birds on numerous occasions in this exact location in the past.

Blackburnian Warbler: 15 Apr at Zaleski SF, Vinton Co. (Bruce Simpson) and 17 Apr in West Chester, Butler Co. provided good, early dates for this stunner.

Prairie Warbler: A bit early was a 17 Apr bird at Magee’s boardwalk, where they are rare but regular migrants (Aaron Bartley).

“Eastern” Palm Warbler: Karl Overman described a bird at Magee Marsh 12 Apr.

Lark Sparrow: One in song at Girdham and Reed Rds., Lucas Co. 11 Apr was the first reported locally.

SMITH’S LONGSPUR: For the second year in a row, a diligent group of Holmes Co. birders located Smith’s in the north-central part of the state, this time in NW Darke Co. Two males were observed in a weedy cornfield, though on private property, but unfortunately I have no further details. Those interested could try leaving a message on the Bobolink Area RBA for further information - 330-763-5119.

Summer Tanager: Craig Holt found a male at Yellow Creek Park in Struthers, Mahoning Co. 15 Apr.

Western Meadowlark: As of 15 Apr, at the junction of Rangeline and Cygnet Rds. in Wood Co., this species can be found yet again (Becky Cullen).

Yellow-headed Blackbird: Quite enthralling for the eastern part of the state was the discovery of a male at Franklin Square, Columbiana Co. 13 Apr by Susan Fader. Bob & Denise Lane dutifully recorded and photographed this bird 14-15 Apr, after which time it seems to have left. Another transient, also photographed, stopped by Quarry’s Edge Villas in Sylvania, Lucas Co. 17 Apr (Diane ?).
