My birding surprise of the year was spotting twenty-five American Avocets resting on the west end of the Cowan Lake swimming beach. They were mostly in breeding plummage.
We have had Avocets before but never more than six at a time and that was at Caesar Creek. I called Bob Powell who came out and got some good pictures which he will post later. Beth Mitchell also went out to see them so I really was not dreaming.

The Yellow-throated Warbler was singing in the picnic area working in the evergreens.
We also heard a Yelllow-throated Vireo. The Cowan Spillway had the first two Spotted
Sandpipers of the season.

Very Happy Birder Cheers, Larry Gara
